1881‐1962 Spanish novelist, poet, and critic. Born in Oviedo, he studied law at the university there. He studied under the professor and critic Clarín (1852-1901), traveled to Europe and the United States, and served on the Italian front during World War I as a correspondent for the Argentine newspaper La Prensa. He was one of the thought leaders under the republican government and was appointed ambassador to Britain, but after the establishment of the Franco regime he went into exile in Argentina. He was allowed to return to the country in 1955. As a poet, he was intelligent, and his symbolic collections of poems include A Small Path (1903) and Many Small Paths (1916), and his essay Masks (1917-19) show his keen insight as a critic of civilization.
