Sexual intercourse between people with close kinship ties. Brother-sister marriage and father-daughter marriage are said to have been common among the upper classes of ancient Egypt. However, today no ethnic group legally permits this practice, and some say it is something that is avoided by human instinct as it has a negative genetic impact, but this is denied on the basis of genetics. Rather, the fact that the incest taboo exists suggests that many cases may have actually occurred. S. Freud considered incestuous desires to be a universal phenomenon experienced by children during their mental development, and that this is the main cause of the Oedipus complex.
