German literary historian and poet. Born in Elberfeld. Professor of modern literature at the University of Cologne (1922-46). He took a position close to George's and created symbolic poetry that was consistent with formal will. He sought a fusion of northern and Greek spirits in German self-overcoming, and his work ``Nietzsche: An Essay on Mythology'' (1918), which used mythological methods, shows the brilliant flowering of his early thought. He supported the Nazi regime's book burnings, and was dismissed from office in 1946, retiring in 1950. He is a prolific writer, but his major works include ``German Forms'' (1934) and ``Many Possibilities'' (1958). His other works include ``Poetry'' (1913) and ``Selections of German Literature'' (1939), which he edited.
