During the Yuan dynasty, the Jingdezhen kilns invented blue and white porcelain, which is made by painting the underglaze of white porcelain with cobalt (blue pigment) and then covering it with a transparent glaze, and the Jingdezhen kilns became a major center of Chinese ceramic production. There are various theories about the origin of blue and white porcelain, including (1) the influence of iron-painted pottery such as the Cizhou and Jizhou kilns, (2) the influence of Islamic pottery from West Asia, and (3) its unique development at the Jingdezhen kilns. There is also no certainty as to when it first began, with some saying it occurred in the late Tang or Northern Song dynasties in China and others saying it occurred in the early 14th century in Japan and Europe. However, it is clear that blue and white porcelain was being produced as early as the 14th century. ...
