1752‐92 Leader of the Tay Son Revolution that arose in the final days of the Le Dynasty in Vietnam. He was also called Nguyen Hui and Nguyen Van Hue. His maiden name was Ho. In 1771, together with his two elder brothers, he took the surname Nguyen and led an uprising in Tay Son near Quy Nhon, sparking a large-scale peasant war against the landlords and peasants' discontent with the feudal lords, the Nguyen clan. In 1777, he allied with the northern lords, the Trinh clan, and defeated the Nguyen clan. He then moved north on the orders of his eldest brother, Nguyen Nhac, and in a short time occupied the Song Khoi River basin. In 1786, he defeated the Trinh clan and entered the court of Emperor Xianzong of the Le Dynasty, married the Trinh clan's princess, seized power, and unified the country with the Tay Son revolutionary army.
