Old Painting Notes - Kogabiko

This book is a collection of information on artists of paintings from ancient times to the end of the Edo period in Japan. The author, Asaoka Okisada (1800-56), was the second son of Kano Naganobu. He learned painting from his father from an early age, and when he grew up and was asked to appraise a painting, he would always copy the painting, copy the artist's seal, and write a brief biography of the artist's lineage in the margins. This book was compiled later based on that. The entire book is divided into sections on the imperial family, courtiers, samurai, Shakumon, Shokado school, poets, waka, linked verse, tea, incense, famous paintings, ukiyo-e, Kose, Takuma, Sumiyoshi, Tosa family, Koetsu school, Kano, Hanabusa school, palace artists, and Yamato-e, and includes appendices on Nagasaki painters and Korean calligraphy and paintings. The handwritten manuscript is known to Tokyo University of the Arts, but the more widely circulated version was revised and enlarged by Ota Kin, head of painting at the Imperial Museum, and published by Yoshikawa Kobunkan in 1904 (Meiji 37). This is an indispensable and important resource for the appraisal and research of old paintings.

日本の古代から江戸時代末期にわたる絵画の作者に関する資料を集めた書物。著者朝岡興禎(おきさだ)（1800―56）は狩野栄信(かのうながのぶ)の次男で、幼時から父に画を学び、長じて人から鑑定を頼まれるとかならずその画を臨模し、落款(らっかん)印章を写し、余白に作者の系流略伝を付記することを常としたが、本書は後年それをもとに編集したもの。全編を帝室、廷臣、武家、釈門、松花堂流、詩人、和歌、連俳、茶、香、名画、浮世絵、巨勢(こせ)、宅磨(たくま)、住吉(すみよし)、土佐家、光悦流、狩野、英(はなぶさ)流、宮殿筆者、倭絵(やまとえ)などに分かち、長崎画人伝、朝鮮書画伝を付録に加えた。その自筆の稿本は東京芸術大学に伝わっているが、1904年（明治37）に帝室博物館絵事担任の太田謹が増訂して吉川弘文(こうぶん)館から刊行した四冊本が流布し、古画の鑑識、研究には欠かせない重要な資料である。
