Freycinetia formosana

Japanese: ツルアダン（英語表記）Freycinetia formosana

A climbing woody plant of the family Pandanaceae, found from the Yaeyama Islands to Taiwan. Aerial roots emerge from each node of the stem and climb up other trees and rocks. The stem is light brown, with noticeable ring-shaped defoliation scars. The leaves are sharp-pointed, sword-shaped, 50-80 cm long, and have sharp thorns on the leaf margins. In summer, a rod-shaped spadix appears at the top of the stem, surrounded by leaves, and produces numerous densely packed yellowish-white flowers without perianths. There are female and male flowers, and the female inflorescence becomes a thick spadix-shaped aggregate fruit that produces densely packed reddish-brown spherical berries. The vine octopus Tsurudako (vine octopus) that grows in the Ogasawara Islands is a closely related species.

タコノキ科のつる性木本で，八重山諸島から台湾に分布する。茎の各節から気根を出して他の樹木や岩上にはい登る。茎は淡褐色で，落葉痕がリング状に目立つ。葉は先が鋭くとがった剣状で長さ 50～80cm，葉縁に鋭いとげがある。夏，茎頂に葉に囲まれて棒状の肉穂花序を出し，花被のない黄白色の小花を密に多数つける。雌花と雄花があり，雌花序はそのまま太い肉穂状の集合果となり，赤褐色で球形の小液果を密につける。小笠原諸島に生えるツルダコ (蔓蛸)はごく近縁な種である。
