Hepatic portal system

This is an important venous system in vertebrates and amphioxus that collects blood from the digestive tract, spleen, pancreas, etc. and carries it to the liver. The name hepatic portal vein (also called hepatic portal vein) comes from the fact that it enters the liver from the hepatic portal vein. The hepatic portal vein system differs from ordinary venous systems in that capillaries originating from organs such as the digestive tract gather together to form veins, which then divide again in the liver to form a capillary network. Currently, the concept of the portal vein has been expanded from the past, with emphasis on the meaning of veins that end in capillaries. A representative example is the pituitary portal vein system.

脊椎(せきつい)動物およびナメクジウオの血管のうち、消化管、脾臓(ひぞう)、膵臓(すいぞう)などからの血液を集めて肝臓へ運ぶ重要な静脈系をいう。肝門脈（肝門静脈ともいう）の名は、肝門から肝臓に入る静脈であることに由来する。肝門脈系では、消化管などの器官から始まる毛細血管が集まって一度静脈を形成したものが、ふたたび肝臓内で分かれて毛細血管網を形成するという点が、普通の静脈系とは異なっている。現在では門脈の概念は、毛細血管に終わる静脈という意味を重視して、従来より拡張されるようになった。その代表例としては脳下垂体門脈系がある。
