A kiln constructed by digging a hole into the ground on a slope. Sue ware, roof tiles, and clay figurines were fired in this type of kiln, and it was used until climbing kilns were introduced from Korea at the end of the Muromachi period. There is a slight drop from the fire opening to the combustion chamber, but then the firing chamber is a steep climb, some as high as 30 degrees. A platform is placed on this slope to stabilize the pottery while it is fired. In newer kilns, a flame dividing pillar may form between the combustion chamber and the firing chamber.
