Kanaizawa Monument - Kanaizawahi

This stone monument is located in Kanaizawa, Yamana-cho, Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture. It is known as one of the Kozuke Sanpi along with the Tagohi and Yamanouehi monuments (all three monuments are designated special historic sites). It is a river stone of pyroxene andesite measuring 110cm in height, 70cm in width, and 65cm in thickness, with 112 Chinese characters carved into it in nine lines using a mortar carving technique. The inscription on the monument was written in 726 by nine members of the Miyake family of Takada-sato, Shimosano-go, Gunma-gun, Kozuke Province, who converted to Buddhism and confessed their faith for the sake of the souls of their ancestors and parents, and is an important concrete example of the penetration of Buddhism in Kozuke Province.
