The person in charge of show business. In the early days of female Kabuki, the highest-ranking prostitutes were called tayu, so the name is said to have come from the meaning of boss. Later in Edo, the owner of the theater, zamoto (called zamoto in Kamigata), held the performance rights (except in Kamigata), so tayumoto took full responsibility for the show. In some cases, actors were zamoto, such as Nakamura Kanzaburo and Ichimura Uzaemon. The son of a zamoto was called wakadayu.
