…Starting out uneducated, Goodyear devoted himself to improving the quality defects of natural rubber, and in 1839, accidentally discovered the hardening of rubber when he left a mixture of raw rubber, sulfur, and white lead next to a stove, laying the technical foundation for the rubber industry that would later become the industry. Thomas Hancock (1786-1865), a British rubber factory owner, improved on this technology, named it "vulcanisation", and obtained a British patent in 1843.
