Petrus Damiani

Petrus Damiani
1007‐72
Italian Benedictine monk, church reformer, and saint. Born in Ravenna, he entered the monastery of Fonte Abela in 1035 and became its abbot around 43. He was later forced to become Bishop of Ostia (1057). At the beginning of the Investiture Controversy, Peter Damiani was interested in Athanasius's Life of Anthony and argued that what was important for monks was their own spiritual progress rather than pastoral work. He denounced the practice of ordaining clergy by secular emperors as nothing other than simony, and he argued that the sacraments conferred by such clergy were invalid, and he imposed stricter monastic discipline.
