Village Guide - Shukuson Taigaicho

Japanese: 宿村大概帳 - しゅくそんたいがいちょう

This is a record of the five Edo-period roads (Tokaido, Nakasendo, Koshu-dochu, Nikko-dochu, Oshu-dochu) and their associated roads (Mino-ji, Saya-ji, Honzaka-do, Yamazaki-dori, Nikko Onari-do, Mibu-dori, Nikko Reiheishi-kaido, Mito-Sakura-do) and the conditions along the roads. There are 71 volumes and 1 volume of a list. A copy is in the possession of the Communications Museum. For each road, there are descriptions similar to those in a detailed list of the post stations, such as the post office fee, household entrance, size of the main inn, number of lodgings, wages for horses and men, the post office staff and horses and how they were assigned, shrines and temples, and occupations. It also records the names of villages, tree-lined streets, mileposts, positions, bridges, etc., that are required for the roadside cleaning, and the lords, village fees, and occupations of the villages along the road. Most of the household statistics are from 1843, but some are from around the Ansei period (1854-1860).

江戸時代の五街道（東海道・中山道・甲州道中・日光道中・奥州道中）およびそれに付属する街道（美濃路・佐屋路・本坂道・山崎通・日光御成道・壬生通り・日光例幣使街道・水戸佐倉道）の宿駅と街道沿いの様子を書き上げたもの。71巻・目録１巻。写本が逓信(ていしん)総合博物館に所蔵される。各街道の宿駅について宿高・戸口，本陣の規模，旅籠(はたご)数，人馬賃銭，宿立人馬とその継立方法，社寺，生業など宿明細帳に近い記述があるほか，次宿までの往還掃除町場の負担村名，並木，一里塚，立場，橋などについても記される。また沿道の村の領主・村高・生業なども記載。戸口統計は1843年調べが大部分であるが，一部安政（1854年−1860年）ごろのものも含む。《近世交通史料集》所収。
