The capital of Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. One of the six major metropolitan cities. Originally a farming area of Gongju, it developed rapidly after the opening of the Gyeongbu Line in 1900. In 1913, it branched off from the Honam Line, and in 1927, the provincial office was moved from Gongju. It is located in the center of the Daejeon Basin, and its industries include spinning, leather, oils and fats, rubber, metal processing, and pig hair products. There are also many educational institutions, including Chungnam University. In 1993, the World Expo was held here. The site is now used as a science and technology center and park. The Korea High Speed Rail (KTX) opened in 2004. The area from Yuseong Hot Springs to Gyeryongsan National Park on the outskirts is a popular tourist destination.
