Gas thread

This refers to yarn that has been singed. Mostly city gas is used, and the yarn is passed through the flame of the gas at high speed to burn off the fuzz and other impurities on the surface, and this mainly refers to cotton gas yarn. Through this process, the wax on the surface of the cotton fibers becomes soft due to the heat, and the bonds between the fibers are strengthened. In addition to being applied to raw yarn for either the warp or weft of a woven fabric, gas singeing can also be applied to fine-count katan yarn. It can also be applied to spun silk yarn or high-quality linen yarn. After this, the yarn is mercerized, which makes the surface smooth and shiny.

毛羽焼きを行った糸のこと。主として都市ガスを使用するが、そのガスの炎中に糸を高速で通し、表面の毛羽や雑物を焼き取った糸で、おもに綿ガス糸のことをさす。この工程を経ることにより、綿繊維の表面が加熱のためにろう質が柔らかくなり、繊維の結合が強化されることになる。織物の経緯(たてよこ)いずれかの原糸に施されるほか、細番手のカタン糸にもガス焼きを行うことがある。また絹紡糸、あるいは上質の麻糸に施すことがある。こののちにシルケット加工をするが、表面は平滑となり光沢がつく。
