Franciscus Gomarus

Dutch theologian. Also called Gomarus. Born in Bruges. Studied at Oxford, Cambridge, and Heidelberg, he became a professor at Leiden University in 1594. When Arminius took up his post as professor at the same university in 1603, a dispute arose between the two over Calvin's doctrine of predestination, with Arminius insisting on the free will of man, while Homarus insisted on a strict interpretation of predestination. After Arminius' death in 1609, he resigned from his position as professor in protest at the selection of a more hardline opponent as his successor, and in 1611 he became pastor at Middelburg, and in 1618 he became a professor at the University of Groningen.

オランダの神学者。ゴマルスともいう。ブリュージュ生れ。オックスフォード，ケンブリッジ，ハイデルベルクに学び，1594年ライデン大学教授に就任。1603年アルミニウスが同大学教授として赴任すると，やがて両者間にカルバンの預定説をめぐる論争が起こり，アルミニウスがあくまで人間の自由意志を強調するのに対し，ホマルスは預定説の厳格な解釈を主張した。1609年アルミニウスの没後，その後任にいっそう強硬な論敵が選ばれたことに抗議して教授を辞任，11年ミッデルブルフの牧師，18年フローニンゲン大学教授に就任。
