1563‐1641 Dutch theologian. Also called Gomarus. Born in Bruges. Studied at Oxford, Cambridge, and Heidelberg, he became a professor at Leiden University in 1594. When Arminius took up his post as professor at the same university in 1603, a dispute arose between the two over Calvin's doctrine of predestination, with Arminius insisting on the free will of man, while Homarus insisted on a strict interpretation of predestination. After Arminius' death in 1609, he resigned from his position as professor in protest at the selection of a more hardline opponent as his successor, and in 1611 he became pastor at Middelburg, and in 1618 he became a professor at the University of Groningen.
