Shiozawa [town] - Shiozawa
An old town in Minamiuonuma County, southern Niigata Prefecture. The main settlement is in the center of the Muikamachi Basin along the Uono River, a tributary of the Shinano River, and developed as a post town on the Mikuni Kaido road. It has long been known as the birthplace of Echigo Jofu, Shiozawa Tsumugi, and Shiozawa Goseki, and the hemp and silk weaving industries are thriving. It is served by the Joetsu Line and the Kan'etsu Expressway, and has many ski resorts, including Ishiuchi. It is the birthplace of Suzuki Bokushi, author of Hokuetsu Seppu. Incorporated into Minamiuonuma City in October 2005. 190.12 km2 . Population: 20,781 (2003).

新潟県南部,南魚沼郡の旧町。主集落は信濃川の支流魚野川に沿う六日町盆地の中心で,三国(みくに)街道の宿場町として発展。古くから越後上布,塩沢紬(つむぎ),塩沢御召の原産地として知られ,麻・絹織物業が盛ん。上越線,関越自動車道が通じ,石打(いしうち)などスキー場が多い。《北越雪譜(ほくえつせっぷ)》の著者鈴木牧之(ぼくし)の生地。2005年10月南魚沼市へ編入。190.12km2。2万781人(2003)。
