A trading company founded in Ostend in the Austrian Netherlands in 1722 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. It was granted trade privileges with the East and West Indies and Africa on the condition that it provide the emperor with 6% of the profits, but it faced fierce opposition from the Dutch and British, who were not happy with the company's prosperity, and was forced to close in 1731 in order to obtain the recognition of the great powers for the Habsburg inheritance of the emperor's eldest daughter, Maria Theresa. However, trading activities continued unofficially until 1744. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
