Middlemarch - Midorumarch (English spelling)

A masterpiece by the British female novelist George Eliot. Written in 1871-1872. As the subtitle "A Study of Provincial Life" indicates, this work attempts to capture the overall picture of the provincial town of Middlemarch by tracing the tangled web of human relationships on the eve of the first electoral reform (1832). It consists of four stories: the story of Dorothea Brooke, the story of Dr. Lydgate, the story of the Garth family and Fred Binsey, and the story of the banker Balstroud. The author's skill in organically linking each story and highlighting the reality of a community with deep insight and mature technique can be summed up in one word: magnificent. Virginia Woolf praised this work, which can be called a classic of English fiction, as "one of the few English novels written for adults."

イギリスの女流小説家ジョージ・エリオットの代表作。1871～1872年作。「地方生活の研究」という副題の示すとおり、地方都市ミドルマーチの全体像を、第1回選挙法改正（1832）の前夜という時点において、蜘蛛(くも)の巣のように錯綜(さくそう)する人間関係の織り糸をたどることによってとらえようとした作品。ドロシア・ブルックの物語、医者リドゲイトの物語、ガース一家とフレッド・ビンシイの物語、銀行家バルストロウドの物語の四つよりなるが、それぞれを有機的に関連させて、一つの共同体の実体を深い洞察力と円熟した手法で浮き彫りにしていく作者の手腕は、みごとのひとことに尽きよう。バージニア・ウルフは、イギリス小説の古典ともいうべきこの作品に、「大人のために書かれた数少ないイギリス小説の一つ」と賛辞を呈した。
