Its official name is Tlaxcala de Xicohténcatl. It is the capital of the state of Tlaxcala in central Mexico. It is located about 100 km east of Mexico City, at an altitude of about 2,250 m on the northwest foot of La Malinche Volcano, overlooking the Sawapan River. It is the center of the surrounding agricultural region, distributing corn, beans, livestock, etc., and has a well-developed textile industry, producing cotton, wool, and synthetic fibers. The area was inhabited by the Tlaxcala Indians before the Spanish conquest, and its official name, "Xicotencatl," commemorates the name of a chief who strongly opposed the Tlaxcala people's cooperation with Mexican conqueror H. Cortes. Cortes conquered the city in 1519, and built the first Christian church in the Americas (Basilica of St. Francis) two years later. The Ocotlan Temple and the Tizatlan ruins are nearby. Population: 50,631 (estimated 1990). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
