During the Edo period, these were places that, with the approval of the shogunate, guaranteed loan documents in which houses were pawned (kapawns). In some cases, the kaisho conducted lending business using their own funds. In Kyoto, before 1743 (Kanpo 3), about 20 pawnbrokers and intermediaries were approved by the magistrate's office. The magistrate's office would not accept lawsuits for gold or silver that did not have the kaisho's seal on the loan document, and the kaisho would collect a monthly fee of 2 momme of silver 5 bu for every 1 kanme (1,000 momme) of original silver from the lender. In Osaka, three pawnbrokers were approved in leap September 1767 (Meiwa 4). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
