A city located in the northern part of Tamil Nadu, South India, about 75 km southwest of Madras, it is one of the seven holy cities of Hinduism. It has a population of 145,000 (1981). It once flourished as the capital of the Pallava dynasty, and is now known as a famous producer of silk textiles such as saris. There are many Hindu temples in the city, and the oldest, Kailasanatha Temple (early 8th century), is a typical example of southern-style architecture, with the main building consisting of a multi-storey pyramidal main hall and a front hall with many columns, surrounded by a temple wall with dozens of small shrines on the inside, and a low tower gate at the front.
