Born: September 11, 1743 in Copenhagen
[Died] June 4, 1809. Frederiksdal. Danish painter. Studied at the academy in his hometown, and studied in Rome from 1772 to 1777. After returning to Japan, he painted a large mural at Christiansborg Palace, but it was burned down. In addition to historical paintings, he painted mainly mythological and literary subjects in a neoclassical style. As the principal of the Danish Royal Academy, he had a great influence on Danish painting at the end of the 18th century. PO Runge and AB Thorvaldsen were his pupils. Major work: Ossian (1787, National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen).

デンマークの画家。生地のアカデミーに学び，1772～77年ローマに留学。帰国後クリスティアンボル宮に大壁画を描いたが焼失。歴史画のほか主として神話，文学に題材を取った新古典主義的作風の絵を描いた。またデンマーク・ロイヤル・アカデミーの校長として，18世紀末のデンマーク絵画に多大の影響を与えた。 P. O.ルンゲ，A. B.トルバルセンは彼の弟子。主要作品『オシアン』 (1787，コペンハーゲン国立美術館) 。
