A village in Shimoina County in the southwest of Nagano Prefecture. Population 780 (1995). It occupies the upper reaches of the Wachino River, a tributary of the Tenryu River. Located at the southeastern foot of the Kiso Mountains, most of the village area is forest and land, with a small amount of cultivated land along the Namiai River that flows east through the center. Namiai, the central settlement, flourished as a post station on the Sanshu Kaido (now National Route 153). Firewood and charcoal production was once thriving, making use of the vast forests and fields, but this fell into decline in the late 1950s and depopulation progressed. In recent years, tourism development has been carried out, including the creation of vacation homes, ski resorts, and golf courses, but the population has remained stable.
