American novelist J. F. Cooper wrote five novels, The Pioneer (1823), The Last of the Mohicans (1826), The Great Plains (1827), The Explorer (1840), and The Deer Hunter (1841). The name of the series comes from the fact that the common protagonist, Natty Bumpoe, always wears leather leggings. In the first three novels, Cooper portrays Natty Bumpoe, who possesses the virtues of both the white and the Indian races, as being defeated by the invading civilization as a historical inevitability.
