[raw]? Died 479 BC. A general of the Achaemenid Empire of Persia. In 492 BC, under the orders of his uncle and father-in-law Darius I, he led an expeditionary force against Athens, crossing the Hellespont (the Dardanelles) from Ionia to the Kingdom of Macedonia and Thrace. However, the fleet was wrecked in a storm at Cape Athos, and he returned to Persia with the Kingdom of Macedonia under his command. In 480 BC, he advised his brother-in-law Xerxes I to launch another expedition against Greece, ravaging Athens, but was defeated in the Battle of Salamis. After the king returned home, he fought Pausanias at the Battle of Plataea and was killed in battle.
