… After retiring from the University of Tokyo, he became a professor at Seikei University (1949-67), president of the university and chancellor of Seikei Gakuen (1949-57), and served as chairman of the Constitutional Research Council from 1957 to 1965. He warned that the debate on constitutional issues in the late 1950s had too strong a political color, and emphasized that it should be approached academically. From that perspective, he collected materials on the process of drafting the Japanese Constitution and conducted empirical research based on them. He is the author of many books and papers, but his main works include Theory of the Sources of Anglo-American Law (1938, revised edition 1956), The Supremacy of Judicial Power (1948, revised edition 1958), The Far East Trials and International Law (1948), and The Process of Drafting the Japanese Constitution (co-edited, 1972). He was also one of the co-editors of the English and American Law Dictionary (1952). …

…　東京大学退官後，成蹊大学教授(1949‐67)，同学長･成蹊学園総長(1949‐57)となったほか，57‐65年，憲法調査会会長を務め，1950年代後半の憲法問題の論議が政治的な色彩をあまりにも強く帯びていたことを戒め，学問的にアプローチすべきことを強調し，そのような角度から日本国憲法の制定過程についても資料を収集，それに基づいて実証的な研究を行った。著書･論文は多いが，おもなものとして，《英米法源理論》(1938，全訂版1956)，《司法権の優位》(1948，全訂版1958)，《極東裁判と国際法》(1948)，《日本国憲法制定の過程》(共編著。1972)があり，また，《英米法辞典》(1952)の共編者の一人でもあった。…
