A place where goods were loaded and unloaded along the waterways and Edo Bay that developed in the city of Edo. In Osaka, it was called Hamachi, and in Kyoto, Kawabata. Storehouses and sheds were built and used as places to store luggage, and some were also places where markets were held and goods were traded. Town houses along the riverside streets had high reputations, and riverside land users had to pay a contribution. To prevent fires from spreading, there were strict regulations such as prohibiting high-piling of luggage. There were many riverside areas along the outer moat, Momijigawa River, Sanjikkenbori River, Kanda River, Sumida River, Shiodome River, Shinbori River, and various waterways in the Koto area.
