A village in Minamiazumi County in the mid-west of Nagano Prefecture. Population 9,766 (1995). It occupies the southwestern part of the Matsumoto Basin and borders Matsumoto City to the east. The eastern part is dominated by the alluvial fan of the Azusa River, which flows along the southern to eastern edge, while the western part is mountainous land on the eastern edge of the Hida Mountains at an altitude of about 2,000m. It has been an open area since ancient times, with many ruins, including the Arakido ruins from the middle to late Jomon period. In the Middle Ages, it was called Nishimaki-go, and was ruled by the Nishimaki (Shigano) clan. The remains of the Nishimaki clan mansion can be found at the eastern foot of Mount Kinshoji. Rice is cultivated on the flat land in the east, and fruit trees such as apples, peaches and grapes, as well as vegetable cultivation, are cultivated in the foothills, where irrigation facilities have been developed. 長野県中西部,南安曇(みなみあずみ)郡の村。人口9766(1995)。松本盆地南西部を占め,東は松本市に接する。東部は南~東縁を流れる梓川の扇状地が広がり,西部は標高2000m前後の飛驒山脈東縁の山地である。古くから開けた地で縄文中・後期の荒海渡遺跡など遺跡が多い。中世には西牧郷といわれ,西牧(滋野)氏の一族が支配し,金松寺山の東麓には西牧氏館跡がある。東部の平地では稲作,灌漑施設の整備が進んだ山麓地帯ではリンゴ,桃,ブドウなどの果樹や蔬菜栽培が行われている。
