[Born] Ryukei 4 (1570) [Death] Revelation 2 (1622) A Chinese poet from the late Ming Dynasty. Born in Gong'an County (Hubei Province). Style name: Xiao Xiu. Together with his elder brothers Yuan Zongdao and Yuan Hongdao, he is known as the "Three Yuans." He went to the capital with his elder brothers early on and associated with notable people. In 1617, he passed the Jinshi examination. Together with his brother, he studied under Li Zhuowu, a leftist of Yangmingism, and formed a school centered around Yuan Hongdao that opposed the formalism of the restorationist literature of the Seven Masters of the Fore and Back Schools, which had been the main force in the literary world since the mid-Ming Dynasty, and advocated the use of free individuality and the respect of pure creative spirit. Depending on the birthplace of the three Yuans, the school is called the Gong'an School, and their style of poetry is called the Gong'an Style. He lived for a dozen years after the death of Yuan Hongdao, but opposed the gradual shift of his followers to vulgarity. He wrote the poetry and prose collection "Kexuesai Collection" (24 volumes).
