The term "Islamic unity" refers to the unity of the Muslim world. In 1803, Shah Wali Ullah's son Abd al-'Aziz issued a fatwa (opinion) declaring India under British rule to be Dar al-Harb (House of Fighting), thereby expressing his sense of belonging to the Ottoman Caliphate. In the modern Muslim world, this was often accompanied by the notion of the caliphate or Dar al-Islam (House of Islam).
