Ecchuyama ruins - Ecchuyama ruins
A collective name for a group of archaeological sites from the late Paleolithic to Mesolithic periods in Etchuyama, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. The site is located on two vast terrace surfaces, the Otori Naehata surface (GtII surface, 100m above sea level) at the low level of alluvial deposits, and the Etchuyama Reclamation Area (GtI surface, 130m above sea level) at the middle level, in the Tateiwa Terrace Group that developed on the right bank of the Aka River and Bonji River. The layers containing the stone tools are the top of the Tsuruoka Loam Formation that covers the terraces. Site A on the GtII surface was the first Paleolithic site excavated in the Tohoku region in 1958. A joint survey was subsequently conducted by the Chido Museum (Tsuruoka City), Yamagata University, and the Asahi Village Board of Education. At least four stages of stone tool culture have been identified: (1) one mainly composed of Kokufu-type knife-shaped stone tools (Site K), (2) one accompanied by semi-bilaterally processed stone points and knife-shaped stone tools (Site A'), (3) one mainly composed of microblades (Sites S, M, etc.), and (4) one mainly composed of bilaterally processed stone points (Site A).
