Viriato (English spelling)
? - 139 BCE
A Lusitanian chieftain who resisted the Roman advance into the Iberian Peninsula. Born a shepherd in the Serra da Estrela, he led a guerilla war against the Roman army that had invaded Lusitania in 154 BC, and was praised by Roman historians for his courage and impartiality. After eight years of resistance, he managed to reach a peace treaty, but in 139 BC he was killed by a subordinate who had been bribed by the Romans, and Lusitania soon came under Roman control.
