This region was never called Azerbaijan until modern times, and in ancient times an Albanian state (the Kingdom of Caucasian Albania) existed in the area north of the Kura River. In the Middle Ages, Shirvan north of the Kura River, Aran between the Kura and Aras rivers, and Mugan on the Caspian coast were all considered separate regions. It was under the control of the central Iranian government and foreign powers, such as the Sassanid dynasty from the 3rd to 7th centuries, the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties from the 7th to 10th centuries, and the Seljuk dynasty from the 11th to 13th centuries, but indigenous governments such as the Kingdom of Caucasian Albania and the Shirvan Shah dynasty also survived, and commercial cities such as Kabala, Shamakha, Ganja, and Bayrakan flourished.

　この地方は近代に至るまでアゼルバイジャンと呼ばれたことはなく，古代にはアルバニア人の国家(カフカス･アルバニア王国)がクラ川より北の地域にあった。中世には，クラ川以北のシルバン，クラ，アラス両川に挟まれたアラン，カスピ海岸のムガンがそれぞれ別個の地方と考えられていた。3～7世紀のササン朝，7～10世紀のウマイヤ朝，アッバース朝，11～13世紀のセルジューク朝系諸政権等，イラン中央政権や外来強国の支配下にあったが，カフカス･アルバニア王国，シルバン･シャー朝等の土着政権も存続し，カバラ，シャマハ，ガンジャ，バイラカン等の商業都市が繁栄した。…
