Ryo Kitamura's house

Ryo Kitamura's house

[Japan]
In Japan, theories and treatments of mental illness based on ancient Chinese medical books have been passed down since the provisions of the Taiho Code, which came into force in 702, but it was not until the mid-Edo period that they were fully organized into an academic system. Notable contributions include those by Kagawa Shutoku, who detailed mental illness in volume 5 of the 22-volume set of Ippon-do Gyoyoigen (1807, Bunka 4); Tamura Gensen, who developed a unique theory of heart disease in Therapeutic Tea Talk (1808); Nakagami Kinkei, who used vomiting as a kind of shock therapy for mental illness; and Kitamura Ryotaku, his disciple who wrote Vomiting Theory (1817). In particular, Tsuchida Ken (Tsukukyo), who made a name for himself by treating more than 1,000 mentally ill people in Edo over a ten-year period, is regarded as Japan's first psychiatric specialist, and his compilation of his treatment experiences in The Experiences of Epilepsy and Mania (1819, Bunsei 2) is considered Japan's first psychiatric specialist book.
