Dohnanyi

Japanese: ドホナーニ
Dohnanyi
Hungarian composer, pianist, and conductor. Born in Požonj (now Bratislava), he studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest. He made his debut as a pianist in 1898. His works were highly praised by Brahms, and he was called the greatest Hungarian composer and pianist since F. Liszt. He taught at the Berlin School of Music from 1905 to 1915, and was principal of his alma mater from 1919 to 1920. He worked with Kodály to reform music education. He was principal of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra from 1919 to 1944. He defended Kodály and Bartók, and actively featured their works. He served as principal of his alma mater (now called the Liszt School of Music) again from 1934 to 1940, and fought against Nazification and anti-Semitism. He left his home country in 1948 and died in the United States. His works are in the style of late German Romanticism, and show his mature style in chamber music such as two piano quintets (1895, 1914), three string quartets (1899-1926), and the Sextet (1935). He also composed three symphonies, orchestral works, concertos, and an opera. His grandson, C. von Dohnányi (1929-), was also active as a conductor, and served as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra.
