Haile Selassie

Japanese: ハイレ・セラシエ(英語表記)Haile Selassie
Haile Selassie
1892‐1975
Emperor of Ethiopia. Reigned 1930-1974. Before ascending to the throne, his name was Ras Tafari Makonnen. Haile Selassie means "the power of the trinity." The son of Menelik II's cousin Makonnen, he was already a powerful man when Menelik II died in 1913, but he took real power in a coup d'état in 1916. After serving as a regency, he became emperor in 1930, and continued his dictatorial rule until 1974, except for a period of exile during the Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941. During this time, he pursued a policy of Westernization on the one hand, but on the other, he continued a policy of protecting conservative ruling classes such as the landed aristocracy and the church.
