Kitano - Kitano

Japanese: 北野 - きたの

It was one of the fields scattered on the southern foot of Kitayama, on the northern edge of Heian-kyo, and extended over the area where Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is currently located in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City. It was named after its location north of the Imperial Palace of Heian-kyo. It is one of the Seven Fields of Kyoto. After the capital was moved to Heian, Kitano became a hunting ground, where deer were allowed to graze and shepherds were stationed. This area has also been a sacred place for the gods of heaven and earth since ancient times, and from the end of the 9th century, worship of the god of thunder, the god of agriculture, became popular. Later, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine was built here to appease the vengeful spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, probably because Michizane's vengeful spirit was associated with the gods of thunder and heaven. Kitano is a utamakura (poem pillow) and there are many poems about it, but in most cases it refers to Tenmangu Shrine.

平安京の北辺，北山南麓に点在する野の一つで，現京都市右京区の北野天満宮鎮座地一帯に広がっていた。名称は平安京大内裏の北に位置することによる。京都七野の一。平安遷都後，北野は遊猟地となり，鹿が放牧され，牧童も置かれていた。また古くからこの地は天神地祇を祀る聖地であり，９世紀末からは農耕神である雷神信仰が盛んになった。のち菅原道真の怨霊を鎮(しず)めるため北野天満宮が当地に造営されるのは，道真の怨霊が雷神・天神と結びついて説かれたためと思われる。北野は歌枕で詠歌が多いが，多くの場合天満宮をさす。
