The central city of Bougainville Island, located at the eastern end of Papua New Guinea. Population 36,443 (2000). Built and rapidly growing due to the large-scale copper resource development on the island, it has served as the administrative center of North Solomon Province, which includes the island, since 1972. It functions as a single city with the former administrative center Kieta, the mining town of Panguna, and Loloho, which is home to a thermal power plant and an ore shipping port.
