A tall palm tree of one genus and one species native to the Ryukyu Islands, reaching a height of 15-20 m and a diameter of 20-30 cm. The trunk is smooth and ring-patterned. The leaves are pinnately lobed, about 5 m long, with many leathery lobes, linear sword-shaped, 60-70 cm long, shallowly bilobed at the tip, green on both sides, and have 2-3 pairs of secondary veins on each side. The spadix emerges from the base of the lowest leaf sheath, droops slightly, branches palmately, and spreads out, about 1 m long. The flowers are monoecious, with female flowers at the bottom of the inflorescence and male flowers at the top. The fruit is horizontal to the axis of the inflorescence, oblong, red when ripe, about 1.3 cm long, and has a fibrous mesocarp.
