Alaya-vijnana - Arayashiki

Japanese:
Alaya-vijnana - Arayashiki

In Sanskrit, it is called ālaya-vijñāna. ālaya means abode and vijñāna means awareness. It is the fundamental awareness established by the Yogacara-Vijnana school of Buddhism (also simply called the Yogacara school or the Yogacara school, and known as the Hosso school in China and Japan). This school establishes eight consciousnesses: six perceptions by the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, manas consciousness, which is self-attachment that mistakes ālaya-vijnana for the ego, and ālaya-vijnana. While the first seven consciousnesses are superficial and conscious, ālaya-vijnana is a deep psychological and unconscious awareness. Alaya-vijnana is likened to a seed because it gives birth to all cognitive representations of the first seven consciousnesses and their representations, i.e., self-consciousness, conscious beings, nature, etc., and also stores the impressions of these representations within the self. As a seed, Alaya-vijnana grows while changing from moment to moment, and when it matures, it gives birth to all the phenomena of the world, and the impressions of these fruits are latent within the self as seeds. The world is not an external reality, but an individual's cognitive representations.
