It is one of the most common anhydrous sulfate minerals. It occurs in low-temperature hydrothermal vein deposits, kuroko deposits, hot spring deposits, metamorphosed stratified manganese deposits, as rocks consisting almost entirely of barite in sedimentary rocks, and in desert regions it often forms floral aggregates of flat crystals called "desert roses". It is often euhedral and obliquely plate-shaped, and is characterized by its color, high specific gravity, low hardness, and cleavage. In Japan, it is famous for its production in the Teine Mine (closed) in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Matsukura Mine (closed) in Otaru, Hokkaido, Kosaka Mine (closed) in Kosaka Town, Kazuno County, Akita Prefecture, and Tamagawa Onsen in Akita Prefecture, which produced lead-containing varieties. The English name comes from the Greek word barys, meaning "heavy".
