Mutsuura

Japanese:
Mutsuura

An old name for the Kanazawa ward of Yokohama city. It is part of the scenic spots that have been praised as the Eight Views of Kanazawa since the early modern period, and in the Middle Ages it belonged to Kuraki County in Musashi Province, and the Mutsuura Manor, consisting of the Mutsuura Hongo, Tomioka, Kamariya, and Kanazawa districts, was established there. Until around 1277 (Kenji 3), it was the territory of Shohoin Temple in Ninnaji, and it is believed that the Shogun family or the Tokuso family became the main family and ruled over it thereafter. It corresponds to the eastern border of Kamakura, and was connected to the center by the Mutsuura Road (Asahina Kiridooshi). Mutsuura, an outer port of Kamakura along with Wakaejima, functioned as a landing point for various goods and boat traffic via the coast of the inland sea (present-day Tokyo Bay) and the old Tone River system, supporting the Kamakura Shogunate and consumption in Kamakura, and was also used for transporting goods around Shomyo-ji Temple, which was built by the Kanazawa clan, a descendant of the Tokuso Tokuso clan, and for transporting goods for the Kamakura Shogunate, the Uesugi clan, and neighboring temples and shrines that controlled the manor area after the Shogunate's fall, and was a problem during the Nanboku-cho period. The hills overlooking the sea were once dotted with towers (tombs), and it is thought to have been a medieval sacred site with Joganji Temple and other temples of various sects.
