...Leader of the peasant movement during the tumultuous period of the Mexican Revolution. A legendary hero who became a symbol of the agrarian reform movement. He was born to a small farmer in Anenecuilco, a small village surrounded by large plantations (haciendas) in the traditional sugar-producing state of Morelos adjacent to Mexico City. Morelos experienced rapid change from the late 19th century to the early 20th century due to the modernization of the sugar industry and the sugar boom, which resulted in a series of conflicts over land and water rights between the plantations and the surrounding villages. In this situation, Zapata led the villagers in an armed attempt to retake land occupied by the plantations in May 1910, and with his strong will and excellent leadership, he became the leader of the peasant movement that rose up in armed uprising. ...
