Linaceae - Amaka

Dicotyledonous, polypetalous. Herbaceous or shrub. Leaves alternate or opposite, entire. Flowers are bisexual and actinosymmetric. Sepals are imbricate, 4-5 in number. Petals are convoluted, stamens are also the same number, alternate with the petals, filaments are fused at the bottom, and have nectar glands on the outside. Ovary has 3-5 locules on top, ovules are inverted, 2 per locule, 3-5 styles are separate and filamentous. Capsules undergo interalveolar dehiscence, with the septa of each locus in the fruit separating into two. Flax is found in temperate zones, with about 25 genera and about 500 species in the world, and one genus in Japan. Native to Central Asia, flax is famous as a source of fiber and linseed oil.

双子葉植物、離弁花類。草本または低木。葉は互生または対生し全縁。花は両性で放射相称。萼片(がくへん)は4～5枚で覆瓦(ふくが)状。花弁も同数で回旋(かいせん)状。雄しべも同数で花弁と互生し、花糸(かし)は下部で合着し、その外側に蜜腺(みつせん)がある。子房は上位で3～5室、胚珠(はいしゅ)は倒生で各室に2個、花柱は3～5本で離生し糸状。蒴果(さくか)は果実内の各室の隔壁がそれぞれ2枚に離れる胞間裂開をする。温帯に分布し、世界に約25属約500種あり、日本には1属が分布する。中央アジア原産のアマは繊維やあまに油の原料として有名。
