A city on the Yellow Sea coast in the western part of North Jeolla Province, South Korea. Population 128,490 (1995). It is located in a paddy field in the center of the Honam Plain, the largest plain on the Korean Peninsula. Irrigation has been an important part of Korea's granary since ancient times, and a large reservoir called Byeonggolje was built during the Silla period. Currently, artificial irrigation is well developed, including water redirection from a dam upstream of the Seomjin River into the Dongjin River, stabilizing harvests. Administrative and agricultural institutions are concentrated in the city, and it is becoming an urban area as a commercial center. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
