The word "en" in enka originally meant a political speech and referred to a former warrior student who sang enka and sold printed matter at entertainment venues, but eventually came to refer to a wanderer who went around singing popular songs with an accordion or violin. When they began to sing love stories and love stories about the common people, they were also written as enka-shi.
