The word "en" in enka originally meant a political speech and referred to a former warrior student who sang enka and sold printed matter at entertainment venues, but eventually came to refer to a wanderer who went around singing popular songs with an accordion or violin. When they began to sing love stories and love stories about the common people, they were also written as enka-shi. 演歌の演は，本来政談演説の演で，盛り場などで演歌を歌い，刷り物を売った壮士くずれの書生をいったが，やがて，アコーディオンやバイオリンなどとともに，流行歌を歌い歩く流しをもさすようになった。市井の心中や情話を歌うようになり艶歌師とも書く。
