Experiments to measure the compressibility of gases and liquids by generating pressure using a mercury column and simultaneously measuring the pressure were attempted until the end of the 19th century, and in 1877-79, Louis Paul Cailletet (1832-1913) and Emile Hilarie Amagat (1841-1915) performed experiments using the Eiffel Tower and a coal mine shaft in Paris to erect a mercury column and reach a pressure of 43 MPa.
