Boyle discovered Boyle's law by compressing air using a mercury column in a U-shaped glass tube with one end closed, and measuring the pressure from the difference in the height of the mercury column in the U-tube. Experiments to measure the compressibility of gases and liquids by generating pressure using a mercury column and simultaneously measuring the pressure were attempted until the end of the 19th century, and in 1877-79, Louis Paul Cailletet (1832-1913) and Emile Hilarie Amagat (1841-1915) performed experiments using the Eiffel Tower and a coal mine shaft in Paris to erect a mercury column and reach a pressure of 43 MPa. However, pressure measurement using a liquid column becomes impractical when it exceeds 0.4 MPa (about 4 m of mercury column). …
