…Abandoning the speculative style of his predecessor, Takebe Tongo, he critically adopted the social survey methods that had developed in America in order to establish an empirical sociology, and wrote “Social Surveys” (1933), setting the precedent for investigating the actual conditions of social phenomena. In particular, sociological research based on these social surveys blossomed in his major work, “Family Structure” (1937). This pioneered a new field of group aspects in the field of family and kinship research, which had previously been focused solely on the institutional aspects, and elucidated their structure and function using sophisticated statistical methods. It can be said that this became the cornerstone of family sociology, of which Japanese sociology can be proud in the world today. …
